Japan’s EC Market Size

Japan ranks fourth in the world in terms of the size of its EC market, following China, the U.S., and the U.K. As consumers continue to refrain from going out due to the global outbreak of the new coronavirus infection, the use of e-commerce (shopping via the Internet) is on the rise.
According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the size of the domestic BtoC (business-to-consumer) EC market, represented by EC malls and online stores such as Rakuten Ichiba, Amazon, and Yahoo! Shopping, will expand to approximately 19.4 trillion yen in 2019 (18.0 trillion yen in the previous year, up 7.65% year-on-year). The percentage of BtoC-EC is 6.76% (up 0.54 points from the previous year), and that of BtoB-EC is 31.7% (up 1.5 points from the previous year), showing an increasing trend, and the digitization of business transactions continues to progress.

Expansion of cross-border EC

With restrictions on overseas travel in the Corona disaster, there is a rapidly growing need to easily purchase “overseas products” that were previously available through travel.
The awareness of the use of cross-border EC in Japan is about 70%, and the number of people who use it is increasing to over 30%.

Brand-name products introduced on social networking sites such as Instagram, Scandinavian goods, baby products, and other products that are not available in Japan, as well as overseas products that are cheaper than in Japan even when shipping costs are included, are very attractive.
The most popular categories of overseas products are as follows,

Cell Phones & Accessories
Tablets、Mini PC, CPU Processors etc Computers
Toys & Games
Kitchen & Housewares
Handbags and Shoes

Easy cross-border EC! How to do cross-border EC to Japan

As the use of cross-border EC continues to expand, there are still many concerns about purchasing directly from overseas EC sites, such as language issues and uncertainty about whether the product will actually arrive.
However, since overseas companies are now allowed to open stores through official partners under various conditions, such as Rakuten Ichiba, it has become possible to easily purchase overseas products at major malls in Japan with peace of mind.
That’s good news for both foreign companies and Japanese consumers!
While there are only a few official partners, our company, Commerce Robotics, is the No. 1 partner in terms of the number of countries supported, and we have earned a track record of safety and trust.
