Japan's EC Market Size
Japan ranks fourth in the world in terms of the size of its EC market, following China, the U.S., and the U.K. As consumers continue to refrain from going out due to the global outbreak of the new coronavirus infection, the use of e-commerce (shopping via the Internet) is on the rise.
According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI), the size of the domestic BtoC (business-to-consumer) EC market, represented by EC malls and online stores such as Rakuten Ichiba, Amazon, and Yahoo! Shopping, will expand to approximately 19.4 trillion yen in 2019 (18.0 trillion yen in the previous year, up 7.65% year-on-year). The percentage of BtoC-EC is 6.76% (up 0.54 points from the previous year), and that of BtoB-EC is 31.7% (up 1.5 points from the previous year), showing an increasing trend, and the digitization of business transactions continues to progress.
